SoFurry FAQ — Answers about the transition to SoFurry Next (SFX)

Frequently Asked Questions

To preface: The current site on sofurry.com is internally called SoFurry 2.0 or SF2, while the one running on sofurrybeta.com is internally referred to as SoFurry Next or SFX. So when we say SF2 that’s the old site, and SFX is the new one.

Q: How long will SoFurry be offline?

A: We don't know yet, there is a lot of work ahead: We have to take several offsite backups just in case, we have to move hardware, buy new hardware and ship it to the datacenter, we have to configure the system on a different network, set up the new switch/firewall, load up the SF2 database on a different machine, develop import code for things that are not imported yet like faves, views etc., then initiate the import of all data and wait for all that to complete. We estimate this will take at least 2-3 weeks, with the physical move timeline being outside of our control entirely. The one externally enforced deadline we have to observe is that by July 30th, all our hardware must be removed from the old datacenter.

Q: How will the transition to SFX work?

A: Due to hosting changes we will have to focus on one site only. Both sites will go down, the SFX server will be moved to a new datacenter, and then SFX will go online. All accounts will be migrated. Any data not migrated will still be available for possible migration later.

Q: What will happen to SF2?

A: We planned to have SF2 run in readonly mode. However this can not be guaranteed right now, as this will require some security checkups and changes, as well as a hosting location.

Q: Will content not imported by users be lost?

A: We will import all visible submissions even if users don’t log in and don’t import their content. The exception is drafts and hidden submissions. We will not delete any SF2 information for the foreseeable future so nothing will be lost even if we have to import it later.

Q: Will view counts reset?

A: We plan to import and preserve the previous view counts on submissions.

Q: What about my faves, watches, friends?

A: Faves and Watches will be imported. At the moment, we don’t plan to import friends because that feature doesn’t have an equivalent on SFX and wasn’t used much on SF2.

Q: What about Flash submissions?

A: All flash submissions will be imported, but we don’t currently have a player/emulator. This may be added later.

Q: Will shouts on my user profile be imported?

A: This is not planned at the moment, however we’re open for feedback on this.

Q: Will submission links change?

A: Yes, but we will add a forward that will make old links continue working. Visitors will be forwarded to the correct new URL automatically.

Q: What about user profile links, will those change?

A: Unfortunately yes. We want to get away from using subdomains as soon as possible for several technical and administrative reasons.

Q: Why not keep SF2 around indefinitely?

A: Because that would be both a significant security risk, and increasingly difficult to maintain. In addition this will free up resources that we need for smooth operation of the new site.

Q: SF2 has many features that are not currently in SFX. What is the plan to address this?

A: Some of these features are currently on the roadmap. Others will return in different form, or will be taken up by existing services. For example, the SoFurry Discord server at https://discord.gg/Symr84r fills a similar role to the current SF Chat. Other lesser-used features, such as Groups and Achievements, will be retired. We will communicate a roadmap in the near future. Of course, nothing is set in stone and (resources and contributors permitting), anything is possible.
